Reflection on my time as a writer for an online newspaper

In english class this year I have learned and improved on many things. What was great about this class was that I was able to write articles on whatever I wanted. What I found very interesting was that we published our work up on to our online class newspaper. All of the classes articles are posted on the website and there are almost new articles posted everyday.

Being a writer for an online newspaper was very interesting. I learned new leads, kickers, how to source websites and edit mine or someone else’s work. The process to get to publishing our work took a while. We would be assigned editors, which were other kids in the class, and we would send it back and forth until it was able to be passed on to our teacher. At times it would be tough when making edits to our articles because I found our editors had different ideas than our teacher. It was still very cool to be able to publish articles online, that I put thought into, for the world to see.

My first article I wrote was a profile on Jadon Sancho, a young soccer player already on the verge of becoming one of the sports greats. Jadon Sancho plays and starts for big time Bundesliga club, Borussia Dortmund. He is exceptional on the ball and his transfer value keeps on increasing. When writing this article I learned how to write a very descriptive, scene setting anecdotal lead. I also improved on transitioning paragraphs or topics in this article.

In my third article I decided to go away from sports and write a historical and memorable article on Chief Poundmaker. He was a plains cree chief back in 1885 who was wrongly convicted of treason. After all these years Justin Trudeau exonerated him on the Poundmaker reserve on May 23, 2019. Learning the history about Poundmaker was so interesting. During the North-west Rebellion in 1885, he decided to think of his community first rather than fighting back against the government. Nobody died in the cree nation during that rebellion because Poundmaker was a peacemaker. My time writing this article, I learned and improved on sourcing and linking my article. There were many quotes and facts that I needed to link to make sure I wasn’t making anything up.

My time being a writer for the 8forty online newspaper was an experience and lesson I won’t forget. I look forward to next year where I will be able to write and publish more interesting articles.

Undefeated Clemson’s black players decline invitation to fast food dinner at White House.

When American president Donald Trump Invited the undefeated Clemson Tigers to a hot fast food meal at the White House,  many of Clemson’s championship football team looked forward to meeting Trump himself. However, “The Root” has learned that Clemson’s black players passed the opportunity politics. The football players that did go were eager to meet the president, and many thought to feast with president meat lover. Some not a fan of his racism and disliked Trump’s divisive that if they didn’t go it would affect playing time or their scholarships. According to The Root three black Clemson players who each separately confirmed that many players, both black and white, had no interest in making the trip. On the official roster of the Clemson Tigers, only 15 black players made an appearance at the White House. Many of those 15 players were either freshman and sophomores. 57 black players are on the roster which means about 74 percent of black players were not guests at the White House. This did not seem to bother Donald Trump as he still had a good time with the players and tweeted out “great guys and big eaters.”
